New Year’s Day 元旦
“Dan” indicates the sun has just above the horizon, “Yuan” means the beginning, initial. Therefore “Yuandan” is the beginning of a year, the first day of the year.
Although the meaning “the first day of the year” has never changed, but in Chinese history, the specific date of “New year’s day” has changed over dynasties. China decided to adopt the Gregorian calendar and called the 1st January as “Yuandan” in 1949. But actually among common people the “New year’s day” is “Chunjie”－“Spring Festival” .

“Dàn ”biǎoshì tàiyánɡ ɡānɡ chū dìpínɡxiàn zhījì，jí yí rì zhī shǐ；“Yuán ”shì
